This summer, the popular Carolina Billfish Classic will return to its home at the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina in Mount Pleasant, but preceding the tournament for the first time ever will be a special event dedicated to women fishermen, the Carolina Ladies Billfish Classic. Benefiting local breast cancer nonprofit organization, Share Our Suzy, participants can expect three evenings of food and fun along with one memorable day of fishing.
Each year, the Carolina Billfish Classic, the third stop on the South Carolina Governor’s Cup, brings out thousands from the fishing community, including celebrities like former NBA all-star Michael Jordan. The women’s event hopes to do the same while raising money for those within Charleston who have been affected by breast cancer. Share Our Suzy was named after local photographer Suzy McGrane, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her late 20 s and used her zest for life to fight her courageous battle.
Loyd Weston, Marina Manager at the resort, met McGrane many times through mutual friends and that is how the resort became involved in the charity. Made up of local business owners and community leaders, the board is completely volunteer - based and has successfully held many local fundraising events in her honor. This year’s event invites passionate lady anglers of all levels to share in the excitement and be a part of billfish history in the Lowcountry.
“We are thrilled to be the official sponsor of the very first Carolina Ladies Billfish Classic where all the funding raised will help local women in alleviating the hidden financial challenges that come with a breast cancer diagnosis,” said Oliver Rooskens, Managing Director of the Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or full-fledged expert, come out and test your fishing skills to support this amazing cause while having some fun out on the water.”
The Carolina Ladies Billfish Classic will kick off on Monday, June 17th through Wednesday, June 19th. The schedule includes can’t-miss activities like a team theme best-dressed contest, a billfish and bubbly tiki bar along with a silent auction.
