John Moffett today announced his candidacy for South Carolina House of Representatives District 110 which encompasses parts of Mount Pleasant, downtown Charleston, James Island and West Ashley. District 110 is considered a battleground district in which members of either party can win.
Moffett said he wanted to "break from the political grandstanding that dominates Columbia and instead seek a return to common sense."
“Loud and out-of-touch voices dominate politics today in both Washington and Columbia," he said. "I’m not interested in yelling and screaming, I’d like to get positive things done for the district and the state. I want to represent the values of the Lowcountry. That means working with people from all over the political spectrum to find solutions that move our community forward.”
Moffett’s priorities include overturning the extreme abortion bans recently enacted by the legislature and protecting IVF and access to contraception. Moffett considers abortion a personal choice that should not be dictated by the government. Other priorities include enacting common sense gun safety measures, more funding for road and infrastructure projects, focusing on public education initiatives, and working across government levels to address flooding threats.
Moffett said that these priorities are basic common-sense values that are too often ignored in today’s political climate.
“Bureaucrats in Columbia continue to take away individual freedoms from our citizens and make our community less safe," Moffett said. "Rather than address real issues that require immediate attention – flooding roads, common-sense gun safety – they’ve taken away a woman’s freedom to make the difficult and heart-wrenching choice to have an abortion and have cowered to fringe groups like Moms for Liberty on education issues. It’s far past time for the voters to control the agenda once again in state government."
Moffett criticized his opponent, incumbent Tom Harnett for his support for extremist bills and causes.
“Harnett certainly has a Lowcountry name, but he consistently votes with the far-right upstate crowd." Moffett said. "His votes to take away abortion rights and on education measures say it all. Tom Hartnett has proven to be an extremist who sides against Lowcountry values far too often.”
Moffett lives in downtown Charleston with his wife Annika. He is a graduate of the College of Charleston and works in public affairs. His past work includes South Carolina state director for the Land and Water Conservation Fund Coalition and State Director for Protect Our Care, a health care advocacy organization.
