Pick Me! SC reached a benchmark with adoption number 10,0000 during its 2023 effort.
“This is our sixth statewide adoption campaign and cumulatively, we have now adopted 10,000 animals across South Carolina,” said Chief Project Officer of No Kill South Carolina 2024, Abigail Appleton, PMP, CAWA. “To reach this milestone is a testament to the teamwork that we are seeing across shelters, rescues and Petco Pet Care Centers to make South Carolina a great place for pets to live.”
This year a total of 2,030 cat and dog adoptions took place between July 17 – 23. Almost 70 shelters, rescue organizations, and Petco Pet Care Centers across the state have united for this monumental adoption affair – the largest of its kind in the entire country.

“This year's goal was to save 2,000 animals, so we are thrilled to perform beyond that” said Appleton. “During summer, animal shelters and rescue organizations face their greatest challenges, and our mission is clear: to find as many dogs and cats safe, loving homes as possible.”
SOCIAL MEDIA SENSATIONS STEP IN TO HELP
The Honorary Co-Chairs of Pick Me! SC were the dynamic social media duo @aguyandagolden, Johnathan Lower and his Golden Retriever Teddy. “We were so excited to be a part of this year's adoption event,” said Lower. “If we inspired just one family to go to their hometown shelter and adopt – it made everything worth it.”
Teddy has more than 1 million followers on social media and videos showing him in his custom-built doghouse with a TV and couch have amassed more than 1 billion views! Johnathan and his team were recently featured in People Magazine after they launched “Shelter Dog Saturdays” to spotlight dogs less fortunate than Teddy and help them find homes.
PETCO PET CARE CENTERS GOT INVOLVED
Most shelters offered free or “low-fee” adoptions throughout the 10-day adoption extravaganza. Petco Pet Care Centers threw open their doors to welcome shelters and rescue organizations, creating an unrivaled opportunity to connect with potential adopters. Nearly every Petco across South Carolina joined the cause.
