On Monday, March 25th, Charleston County and City of Charleston leaders cut the ribbon on the Johns Island Northern Pitchfork. The new road serves as an alternate route for drivers coming from the Stono River Bridge who need to turn right onto River Road and those traveling on River Road towards Maybank Highway. Drivers will be able to turn left at the pitchfork and avoid the traffic light at River Road and Maybank Highway.
“This alternate route is just one of several initiatives the County and City are working together on to help alleviate traffic backups on Johns Island,” said Charleston County Council Vice Chairwoman Jenny Costa Honeycutt. “We know there has been an incredible amount of growth on the island in the last few years, and we are continuing to work on solutions to keep traffic moving throughout the island.”
“The goal of this new road is to improve connectivity on the island and create another route to get drivers off of Maybank Highway and onto River Road faster,” said Councilmember Joe Boykin. “We want to encourage drivers to use this new road to allow for smoother travel times on Maybank Highway during the morning and afternoon peak rush hours.”
The road will officially be open by 3 pm on March 25, 2024.
