The Charleston Area Justice Ministry will host an annual celebration to recognize its successful Nehemiah Action last month that solicited commitments from public officials around education equity and the organization’s work throughout the past year to address affordable housing, environmental justice, healthcare and policing. The celebration will be held May 20th at 6:30 pm at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church (7396 Rivers Ave., North Charleston) and is open to the public.
There will be food, music, and presentations to award congregations with the most attendance and CAJM members who made an outstanding impact this past year.
Since last Spring, CAJM has successfully:
- Advocated for funding for Fetter Healthcare Network to add an additional mobile unit to its arsenal. A mobile unit will be present at the celebration for guests to tour and hear from Fetter leaders about how the unit is expanding healthcare access.
- Solicited a commitment from the Charleston County School District to implement Restorative Practices in all Charleston County schools.
- Advocated for the establishment of an affordable housing trust fund in Charleston County, which council voted this year to adopt.
- Engaged the Charleston Police Department around best practices for reducing racial disparities in law enforcement practices.
- Hosted its annual Nehemiah Action, where 1,200 people demanded ethical governance from the Charleston County School Board. Three board members agreed to advocate for an audit of the school board’s operations, among other commitments.
The celebration is also CAJM’s key fundraising event, providing people with an opportunity to learn about our organization’s work to make Charleston a more just place to live and work. Persons can invest in CAJM by clicking here or visiting our website at charlestonareajusticeministry.
