AFFA Action, the Charleston Jewish Federation, and Mother Emanuel AME Church released the following joint statement condemn the recent cross-burning in Conway, SC (the suspects are pictured):
"The recent cross burning in Conway, SC, is an appalling manifestation of hatred and racism that has no place in our society. AFFA Action, Charleston Jewish Federation, and Mother Emanuel AME Church vehemently condemn this despicable act and stand in unwavering solidarity with the victims of this heinous incident and with the broader black community in Horry County.
The individuals responsible for this hateful act may have targeted a single family, but they intentionally used a symbol historically associated with racial terror and intimidation, which not only impacts the immediate victims of the crime but instills fear throughout the community as a whole.
It is deeply disheartening that, in 2023, such acts of racism persist in our communities. It is also disheartening that South Carolina remains one of only two states in the U.S. without a hate crime law, and a few powerful senators continue to block debate on this critical legislation. This legislative inaction is not only hurtful to the victims of these crimes, but also to the members of all communities that are targeted with hate-motivated violence.
We call upon our community leaders and elected officials to take a strong stance against racism and to actively work toward fostering communities of inclusivity, tolerance, and respect. We implore them to use their positions to support and enact legislation that addresses hate crimes and provides justice for victims.
This incident in Conway should serve as a wake-up call for our community to confront the deeply rooted issues of racism, bigotry, and hate-motivated violence. Our organizations remain committed to fighting against discrimination and injustice and we will continue to advocate for protection for our collective communities.
