Installing a wig isn’t quite as simple as plug-and-play, but it’s pretty close.
To get the best out of your install, let’s review a few key items: prepping your natural hair, prepping the wig, and finally, the install.
Prepping Your Hair
Proper glueless wig installs start with how you wear your natural hair underneath. Hair should be kept out of the way and secured snugly. This helps to create a smooth wig base and protects your natural hair.
Braids, Cornrows, or Twists
Braids and twists are an excellent way to protect your locks while creating a flat base. For longer lengths, the hair can be crossed at the nape of the neck and brought back up to the crown of the head, then pinned or tucked to secure.
Low Ponytail or Bun
Quick and dirty, a low pony or bun is an effective way to secure hair and keep it out of the way. The easiest place to hide excess hair is at the nape of the neck, which is why glueless wigs are more flexible in this area.
Wig Caps, Headbands, Stockings, or Mesh
These are entirely optional and are personal preferences.
Wig caps mimic the look of your scalp under the wig. Some people like stocking or mesh wig caps because they can easily twist their hair inside the cap and pin the closure to the top of their head. Wig headbands (wig grips) are good for those who like a secure band but not excess fabric. All of these products secure loose hair away from the face and help flatten thick buns.
Prepping the Wig
A little prep goes a long way in maximizing the look of a glueless wig. The natural-looking results will make you glad you took the extra time!
Right Out of the Bag
The first thing you should do with a new wig is to give it a good, gentle shake. Tip the wig upside down and lightly shake it back and forth.
This will loosen the fibers in the wig and give it volume. Brush or comb lightly before moving on.
Bleaching the Knots
Hand-tied wigs have knots where the hair is attached to the lace. These knots are visible through the wig and can detract from a natural appearance. Knots should be lightened (by you or a professional) by carefully applying a bleach solution to the inside of the cap. Cover lightly with foil and wait according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then rinse off and condition.
Plucking the Hairline
Wigs are plucked to mimic the thinner hair density we have along our hairlines. Plucking is best done with the wig pinned to a head form or equivalent. Comb the hair back and clip it so you can clearly see the hairline. Using a pair of angled tweezers, pluck a few hairs at a time in a zigzag motion all along the front ¼” of the wig until you no longer see a defined line.
You may need to make several passes until you’re satisfied with the look. Stop and reassess periodically to avoid going overboard.
Trimming the Lace
Lace front wigs have excess material that needs to be trimmed. Place the wig on your head, pulling it just a bit too far forward. Follow directly against the curve of the ears with a comb to part away excess material. Use that part as the guide to trim away. Then, carefully cut along the rest of the wig front, staying about 1-2 mm away from the hairline.
Finish by lightly dabbing some foundation along the hairline so the remainder best matches your skin tone.
The Actual Install
Once prepped, the easiest part is the install!
Placing the hairline against your forehead, flip the wig (or your whole head) forward. Using your forehead as an anchor, gently pull the rest of the wig over the base of your head. Tighten the strap at the base of the wig until it feels comfortably snug, then pull the nape of the wig down to your neck and secure the comb underneath the strap.
Now flip the hair (or head) back and gently push the hairline until it sits just in front of your natural hairline while making sure the side combs are catching into your hair. If you push the wig too far back, remove it and start again.
And it’s as simple as that!
