International African American Museum (IAAM) is holding two sessions of a photography workshop on Saturday, April 20th, 2024, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the art of capturing the moment. The program is crafted to enrich the elements and themes found within the special exhibition at IAAM entitled “Ming Smith: Feeling the Future,” which closes April 28th, 2024.
Local public historian, photographer, and filmmaker Joshua Parks will lead the workshop exploring themes of African American cultural expression, representation, and Afrofuturism within Ming Smith’s work while also learning how to truly ‘catch the moment.’
Technology will be provided by the museum and no prior experience is needed. This introductory photography experience is focused on preserving African American history and will illuminate the vibrant and multi-layered practice of artist Ming Smith, spanning from the early 1970s to the present. Ming Smith: Feeling the Future will be on view only through April 28th, 2024, and offers a guided tour into unperceived moments of life as captured by one of the most profoundly gifted artists of her generation.
