By: Jeff Walker, Book Review
Whether you’re sitting by the pool or relaxing on the beach and craving your next compelling summer read ‘Eli’s Redemption’ will more than fill the void. The latest offering from Charleston resident Paul Attaway checks all the right boxes including murder, mystery, intrigue, betrayal, and family drama as well as two southern favorites, golf and Christianity.
Just 18 years of age Eli Atkins is the focus of his girlfriend’s brutal murder. Will fleeing to a tropical paradise with the help of unsuspecting conspirators only add to his presumed guilt. As they say, ‘time will tell’. Upon arriving in his new surroundings young Eli is met by a bevy of characters, some positive influences, some not.
Enter Lach McGregor and Bernard Lasko, two elderly men who will have opposite effects on Eli. Lach, a retired physically challenged golf swing coach is not handicapped by the sport, with his lessons proving both a blessing and a curse to Eli. On the other hand, Bernard a criminal masquerading as a charitable businessman has nothing but ill-gotten intent for Lach’s latest student.
Several questions abound. Will Eli ever be able to return home or will he be exiled to paradise forever never to see his family again. Will Eli be able to clear his name or continue to be a pawn for a scrupulous financier who is carrying a lifetime of baggage. Finally with Eli’s first love a mere memory, will he be able to find love again.
Set during a five-and-a-half-year period during the mid 1970’s ‘Eli’s Redemption’ is an easy to read 350-page turner, with Attaway touching on several hot button topics from young love to family deception and from high stakes hustling to worldwide crime syndicates. Using Charleston and the Bahamas as the preferred backdrops only adds poetic justice to Attaway’s narrative.
Attaway’s latest offering is a follow up and continuation to his 2020 debut ‘Blood in the Lowcountry’. As he did in his first suspense novel Attaway defines the characters in ‘Eli’s Redemption’ early on, providing adequate back stories whether they be family members, officers of the law, longtime church goers, or local businesspeople. Attaway does an equally nice job of blending fictional and non-fictional roles and surroundings in this 1970’s period thriller.
