The NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly holding their upcoming preseason training camp in the Holy City. ESPN's Marc Spears made the announcement on the network's NBA Today program and also on his Twitter account.
According to Spears, head c oach Doc Rivers said the team is coming to Charleston “to help prepare for next season without distraction and also learn the local history.” Spears also said the 76ers are “probably going to go to a slave museum and learn about the Gullah culture out there in South Carolina.”
This is not the first time Coach Rivers has held training camps somewhere besides his team's usual home. He’s previously held camps in Vermont (Boston Celtics), Europe (Celtics), and Hawaii (Los Angeles Clippers).
No other details about Philadelphia’s trip to Charleston have been announced, which has led to speculation about where they will practice and visit. According to the Post & Courier, a College of Charleston official told them that the team “backed out of a deal to use the school's facilities for training camp.”
The NBA’s training camp schedule is unknown, but practices typically starts mid-to-late September.
