The Charleston Battery are delighted to announce Monday the signing of Honduran international forward Douglas Martínez to a multi-year contract, pending league and federation approval.
Martínez, 27, brings a wealth of goalscoring experience from Liga Nacional (Honduras), USL, MLS and the national team levels to Charleston, who were the USL Championship’s second-best attacking team in 2024.
“I'm excited for the season to start, I came here to help the team fight and win games,” said Martínez. “I'm sure that is going to be a good season and hopefully we can win some trophies.
“I’ve played against the Battery many times and they were always a very tough team to play against. I like the squad, the way the team has played and the fans who are behind the goal always there supporting the team.”
Martínez previously competed with USL sides Indy Eleven, Sacramento Republic FC, San Deigo Loyal SC, Real Monarchs SLC and New York Red Bulls II, and MLS club Real Salt Lake. Martinez has tallied 40 career goals and 21 assists in 188 matches across all competitions in the U.S. and won the USL Championship title in 2019 with Real Monarchs.
A native of Olanchito, Honduras, Martínez made his professional debut in 2013 with Liga Nacional club Vida at 16 years old.
“We are thrilled to add Douglas to our club, he is not only an experienced striker in this league, but he is a tremendous person,” said Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He has played for our staff before and is a hard worker. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win, has great speed and quickness, runs well beyond the opponent, and has a physical presence that we have lacked at times.”
Martínez reunites with assistant coach Tim Daniels after the two were together at San Diego in 2021.
On the international stage, Martínez is a member of the Honduran national team and has eight caps and one goal with the senior team since debuting in 2019. Martínez competed with La H in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, appearing in all three matches.
Martínez also represented Honduras at the U-20, U-21 and U-22 levels, including at the 2017 Concacaf U-20 Championship, 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2019 Pan American Games.
Martínez is excited about joining the Battery and Lowcountry community in 2025.
“I first knew about Charleston in 2017, when I was with the Red Bulls, and since then it’s been a great, historic and emblematic team,” said Martínez. “I had friends who played there, like Maikel Chang, Justin Portillo, Zeiko Lewis, Augi Williams, and they always said good things about the Battery.
“My message to the fans is to be there supporting our team because we’re going to try to win every game. I hope that they enjoy 2025 with us.”
