Michelle Brandt (pictured), a candidate for House District 113, today sent a letter to Governor Henry McMaster asking him to to Support South Carolina's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. You can read her letter in full below.
"Dear Governor McMaster,
It is disheartening to hear that you are leading a dangerous rhetoric that targets the immigrant community. However, I hope that in your eager support of President-elect Donald Trump, you will join me in supporting initiatives that uplift all members of our community, including those brought to this country as children under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
DACA recipients contribute greatly to South Carolina’s economy and social fabric. Many of these young individuals have pursued higher education, obtained professional training, and committed themselves to building prosperous lives in our state. However, despite their qualifications, they are currently banned from practicing certain professions in South Carolina—even when they meet the educational and professional requirements.
It is crucial for our state to have leadership that prioritizes the well-being of all South Carolinians. Our focus needs to be on strengthening economic opportunity, especially when there is an alarming shortage of teachers and nurses. The SC Daily Gazette reports that South Carolina is on its way to becoming the “nation’s 7th worst” when it comes to nursing shortages.
This restriction not only limits their potential but also deprives our state of talented professionals who are ready and willing to contribute to critical fields. I urge you to consider how supporting removing these barriers would strengthen South Carolina's workforce and reflect our state’s commitment to fairness and opportunity for all.
As our Governor, you have the power to be a leader who champions pragmatic policies that align with President-elect Trump’s stated commitment to ensuring DACA recipients can continue to thrive and prosper in our communities. I am hopeful that we can work together to ensure South Carolina sets an example of leadership and opportunity for the nation.
Respectfully,
Michelle Brandt
Candidate for House District 113"
