Michelle Brandt today officially filed her candidacy for the South Carolina House District 113 seat, which was vacated with the resignation of former Rep. Marvin Pendarvis. A special election to fill the seat will be held in March 2025.
“As a wife, mother, and environmental scientist, I have always been driven by my commitment to the well-being of working families,” said Brandt. “I’m running to expand childcare options, create affordable housing programs, reduce gun violence, and make our streets safer. These are critical issues that affect every family in District 113 and across South Carolina.”
Brandt says her priorities include:
Affordable Housing
As a renter herself, Brandt said she recognizes the urgent need for more affordable housing to ensure families can achieve stability. Her proposed solutions include offering incentives to create homes at varied price points, establishing a renter’s tax credit, and promoting policies that lower housing costs for all.
Healthcare
Brandt advocates for expanding Medicaid to ensure everyone in South Carolina has access to quality care. She also calls for an expansion of the state’s childcare scholarship program so more families can benefit, as well as developing public-private partnerships to increase childcare availability and make it more accessible for working parents.
Infrastructure
She supports projects like the Lowcountry Rapid Transit system to reduce congestion, create affordable housing opportunities along transit corridors, and provide reliable transportation options.
Reducing Gun Violence
Reducing gun violence in North Charleston is a top priority for Brandt. She envisions a multifaceted approach that addresses root causes, including investments in youth programs like after-school initiatives targeted at teenagers.
“I believe in creating a South Carolina where every family has the support they need to thrive,” Brandt continued. “District 113 deserves a representative who will fight tirelessly for safer neighborhoods, better opportunities for working parents, and fair, affordable housing for all.”
Brandt is currently the 3rd Vice Chair of South Carolina Democratic Party and an organizer with Planned Parenthood.
