Local Pastor, businessman, Murray’s Mortuary co-founder, and Ravenel Resident, Rev. Charlie L. Murray Jr. today announced that he will be a candidate for SC House District 116, representing Hollywood, Ravenel, Edisto Island and Edisto Beach, Wadmalaw Island, and parts of Johns Island and West Ashley.
Murray said he aims to be a fresh voice with a new perspective representing his lifelong community in the State House. His official announcement and campaign kickoff will take place on Sunday, March 17th at 3 pm at the Island Porch on Johns Island.
Murray has called the Lowcountry home all his life. He, his wife, and four children are residents of Ravenel. He is Pastor of First Baptist Church of James Island and co-owner of a funeral home serving families across Charleston, the Lowcountry, and the Sea Islands.
In 2004, Murray and his co-founder became the youngest funeral service entrepreneurs in the State and the business has been recognized by The South Carolina House of Representatives.
He has a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management, a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education and Master’s Degree of Divinity.
Murray currently holds multiple positions locally and statewide, including the Sea Island Comprehensive Healthcare Cooperation Board, International Council of Griots with the IAAM, Board member for James Island Interfaith Action Committee and James Island Outreach, Morris College Board of Trustees serving on the Education and Business Committee, and is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
"I am committed to improving the quality of life for my neighbors in this part of the Lowcountry, a place my family has always called home," Murray said. "I am no stranger to the community as an advocate for various issues. Whether it be through community organizing and advocacy, philanthropy, or a Sunday morning sermon from the pulpit, I have been vocal about the changes we need in our communities. I plan to serve the constituents of District 116 with the utmost pride and dignity. We need to broaden our perspective and unify our district. Together, we’ll be a stronger, wiser, and better District 116."
