The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) is seeking engaged citizens to serve as poll workers for the upcoming presidential preference primaries.
For the 2024 election year, South Carolina voters will be the first in the nation to participate in a Democratic presidential preference primary (PPP), and the first in the South to vote in a Republican presidential preference primary. The Democratic PPP will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, while the Republican PPP is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24.
BVRE is offering hundreds of paid positions to those interested in serving during these historic events. Poll workers are paid $200 for each election worked.
“Being a poll worker is not just a job, it’s a duty. It’s a chance to uphold democracy, to protect the rights of your fellow citizens, and to make a difference in your community,” stated BVRE Executive Director Isaac Cramer. “You are not only serving the country on Election Day, you are empowering its people. We need your help to ensure a successful experience for all eligible voters.”
Those interested in applying to work as a poll worker must be a registered voter in South Carolina, or aged 16 or 17. Poll workers should be willing and able to complete online and in-person training, be prepared to work the entire Election Day, and be nonpartisan and neutral while working an election.
Several roles are available to poll workers of all abilities, including greeting voters, checking voters in, and overseeing the curbside voting process. Prior experience is not required, and training is provided by BVRE’s precinct team.
If you are interested in serving, you can apply on CHSVotes.gov, email our precinct team, or call us at (843)- 744-8683. Poll worker applications are also available at our North Charleston headquarters, located at 4340 Corporate Road.
The Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections is responsible for conducting all municipal, state, and federal elections that are held in Charleston County. BVRE also conducts outreach events with community members that encourage election education and participation.
