Mayor-elect William Cogswell today invited President Joe Biden to speak at the City of Charleston’s Mayoral and City Council Inauguration ceremony on Monday, January 8th at noon in front of City Hall, as well as the reception at Washington Square Park. Both the ceremony and reception are open to the public. President Biden previously announced that he will be in the Holy City to visit Mother Emanuel AME Church.
“On such a historic day, I would be honored to have President Joe Biden to give remarks at our city’s formal inauguration ceremonies," said Mayor-elect Cogswell. "Charleston is a world-class city, and we want to showcase our city government and employees to our President."
The city will temporarily block off the corner of Broad and Meeting streets to accommodate the ceremony. This event is open to the public, providing an opportunity for the community to witness the swearing-in of Mayor Cogswell and join in the festivities.
Seating is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. To secure a good vantage point, attendees are encouraged to arrive approximately 20 to 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled noon start time.
The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to last 45 minutes, allowing attendees to witness the formal induction of Mayor Cogswell and newly elected city council members into office. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception in Washington Square from approximately 1 pm to 2 pm.
