The Senate’s version of the Violence Against Women Act was passed by the US House of Representatives today after the GOP version was defeated. The measure will be renewed and now goes to President Obama, who is expected to sign it.
The Washington Post succinctly described the Act as follows:
The bill renews a 1994 law that has set the standard for how to protect women, and some men, from domestic abuse and prosecute abusers.
The renewal will also expand the bill to include “gays, lesbians and transgender people, Native Americans and immigrants under its protections.”
Oddly, all five of the South Carolina Republicans in the House voted against the measure. James Clyburn, a Democrat, was the only SC Rep to vote in favor of the bill.
