We Are Family today announced the upcoming Conexiones Leadership Camp, taking place from September 13th to 15th, 2024. This three-day event will take place in North Charleston and is designed to empower and connect LGBTQ+ youth, helping them develop leadership skills and build stronger Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) in their schools and communities. This camp is focused on increasing the leadership skills of queer and trans Hispanic and Latinx youth, therefore, we are prioritizing applicants who are Hispanic, Latino/Latina/Latinx/Latine. However, community members of all backgrounds are welcome to apply.
The Conexiones Leadership Camp is a cornerstone event in We Are Family’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ young people in the state. The camp will help community members and students ages 16-24, homeschooled youth and youth who attend school online, and those interested in expanding LGBTQ+ support at their school/community increase their leadership skills, learn about intersectional social justice issues and movement-building, get resources for affirming health and wellness and more, while engaging in fun community building activities such as photography, art and more.
“Students who sign up for our camp are in for a real treat! It will be like nothing they have experienced with fun activities planned that will teach them leadership skills they will use throughout the school year and beyond,” said Program Director Jonatan Guerrero-Ramirez.
“Our goal is to create a space where LGBTQ+ youth feel seen, heard, and valued,” said Deputy Director Jessica Gaines. “We’re deeply committed to fostering an environment where every young person can thrive, and this camp is a vital part of that mission, extending specifically to members of the Latinx community.”
Key Highlights of the Camp Include:
- Workshops and Training: Participants will engage in interactive workshops led by experienced facilitators on topics such as leadership development, community organizing, advocacy, and mental health awareness.
- Peer Networking: The camp will provide a safe and supportive space for LGBTQ+ youth to connect with peers who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of community and solidarity.
- Guest Speakers: Inspirational speakers from the LGBTQ+ community will share their stories, offering insights and encouragement to the next generation of leaders.
- Outdoor Activities: In addition to the educational components, campers will enjoy a range of outdoor activities that promote teamwork, self-expression, and relaxation.
Conexiones Leadership Camp is about equipping young people with the skills and confidence to make positive changes in their schools and communities.
Registration for the Conexiones Leadership Camp is open until spots are filled. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. The camp is free of charge to participants, thanks to the generous support of our donors and community partners.
