The Venezuelan community in Charleston is coming together for a demonstration titled “Protest for the Truth” in response to the recent controversial election results in Venezuela. The event will take place on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at James Island County Park, located at 871 Riverland Dr., Charleston, SC 29412. The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., doors open at 4 p.m.
This gathering is part of a global movement initiated by Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who called for worldwide protests beginning on August 10, 2024. The protests aim to mobilize some of the 7.7 million Venezuelans who have fled their home country, and supporters “in any part of the world” against the current regime led by Nicolás Maduro and in pursuit of truth and justice for Venezuela.
The protests come in the wake of the disputed election held on July 28, 2024, in which Maduro was declared the winner with 52% of the vote, securing a third six-year term. The opposition, however, claims to have copies of more than 80% of the voting records, which they assert demonstrate a significant victory for their candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia.
In the hours following Maduro’s proclaimed victory, widespread protests erupted across Venezuela, leading to 25 fatalities and the detention of over 2,400 individuals.
Charleston joins more than 300 cities around the world in participating in this day of protest, as the global community stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan people in their fight for democracy and the truth.
