Calling all adrenaline junkies and thrill seekers! On May 18th, Trident United Way is offering individuals an opportunity to rappel down a nine-story building in scenic downtown Charleston to raise funds to benefit the Tri-County Reading by Third Project.
The local organization, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary of bringing education, financial stability and health opportunities to Tri-County residents, will host Over The Edge: Rappel United at Hyatt Place Charleston, Historic District on King Street. Individuals who register will receive their own fundraising web page and are asked to raise $1,000 to secure one of 92 rappel spots on that Saturday.
They money raised will benefit The Tri-County Reading by Third Project, a partnership between TUW and all four local school districts to bring innovative teacher training and supports to the classroom. Currently, only about half of students in the Tri-County are reading on grade level by the end of third grade. Trident United Way has committed to provide up to $1.5 Million to the project over a three-year period.
“Making sure students have mastered the fundamentals of reading is so critical to their success later in life,” Trident United Way President & CEO Chloe Knight Tonney said. “What better way to raise money for this noble endeavor than by thinking outside the box and doing something brand new in Charleston?”
Tonney emphasizes that just because you don't like heights doesn't mean you can't participate in this event. The organization needs volunteers both the day before and day of the event and she encourages everyone to come out and watch rappelers.
“This event will be so much fun for participants and spectators alike,” Tonney said. “It's going to allow you to see Charleston from a whole new angle and really appreciate the beauty of this city while contributing to the success of the future generation of its residents.”
