The College of Charleston is proud to announce the inaugural launch of The Sisters of Septima program, a dynamic new initiative inspired by the legacy of Civil Rights leader and educator Septima P. Clark. This groundbreaking program is designed to uplift and empower women of color through mentorship, academic support, leadership development and community service.
Named in honor of Septima P. Clark, a pioneer in the civil rights movement, The Sisters of Septima program aims to provide its members with the tools, guidance and support necessary to thrive academically and professionally. Clark’s work in education and activism continues to inspire generations, and this program seeks to honor her legacy by fostering a strong community of women who share her vision of equality, empowerment, and social change.
Program Overview:
- Mentorship and Leadership Development: Participants of the Sisters of Septima will receive personalized mentorship from faculty, staff, and community leaders. Workshops and events will focus on developing leadership skills and providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
- Academic Support: Sisters of Septima members will be offered tutoring, study sessions, and access to academic resources designed to support their success in the classroom.
- Community Service: True to Septima Clark’s commitment to civic engagement, the program includes various opportunities for members to participate in community service initiatives that address local and global challenges.
- Cultural and Professional Networking: Members will be able to engage with professionals and alumni in various fields, gaining exposure to career opportunities and building strong support networks.
Mattie Riddick '26, one of the program’s students said, “The Sisters of Septima is more than just a support network—it’s a sisterhood rooted in the principles of service, scholarship and leadership. We are building a space where women of color can connect, grow and uplift each other as we honor Septima Clark’s remarkable legacy.”
The inauguration ceremony will be held on October 16 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and will be a poignant celebration of sisterhood, solidarity, and leadership. Each inaugural cohort member will be presented with a commemorative Septima Clark coin, symbolizing their commitment to continuing their educational activism legacy.
Techa L. Smalls-Brown, director of The Sisters of Septima program and a graduate of the College of Charleston said, “This initiative is vital to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for women of color at the College of Charleston. The program’s mission reflects the core values that Septima Clark championed—equality, access to education, and the power of community. We are excited to see how our students will grow and contribute to the world as leaders.”
