Mr. Mercedes, a 10-episode television series based on a best-selling Stephen King novel of the same name, begins filming in the Charleston area next month.
The book is being adapted for TV by Emmy winner David E. Kelley (Boston Legal, Ally McBeal, The Practice) and is scheduled to premiere on both DirecTV and AT&T U-verse in 2018.
Mr. Mercedes centers on a demented killer who taunts retired police detective Bill Hodges with information about a mass murder involving a stolen Mercedes. The novel was published in June 2014 and promptly moved to the top of the New York Times best-seller list. It won the Edgar Award for best novel.
Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson (Into the Storm) will play Detective Hodges, while Harry Treadaway ( Penny Dreadful ) will portray Brady Hartsfield, the Mercedes Killer. As usual, plenty of Charlestonians will also have a chance to appear on screen. Tona B. Dahlquist Casting will handle casting for extras, so if you are interested, visit their Facebook page. According to initial press releases, the late Anton Yelchin was originally tapped to star as Hartsfield.
UPDATE: 12/13/16 – According to Deadline, Kelly Lynch (Cocktail, Road House) has joined the cast. She will be play Brady Hartsfield’s mother.
Mr. Mercedes is the latest production to film in the Holy City, which has become a popular spot for both TV and cinema projects. Other productions that have called the Charleston area home include Top Chef, Vice Principals, Southern Charm, Naked, Leavey, The Inspectors, The Sinner, Reckless, and South of Hell.
