Multiple media outlets, including CNN and The USA Today, are reporting that Dylann Roof, the Charleston shooting suspect, has been taken into custody in Shelby, NC.
The following information came from the Charleston Police’s noon press conference:
Roof was arrested during a traffic stop, which happened about 14.5 hours after the shooting occurred. Police were led to the suspect after a citizen called them to say they saw someone acting suspicious. He was reportedly cooperative with the officer who stopped him.
Charleston detectives are on their way to Shelby to interview Roof.
Shelby is about 244 miles and 3 hours and 40 minutes from downtown Charleston. It is about 46 miles west of Charlotte (less than an hour drive).
