Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 10624 will host a free Memorial Service aboard the historic aircraft carrier USS Yorktown on Saturday, December 7 at 11 a.m. to honor the twenty-five known South Carolinians who were killed in the 1941 Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.
The Museum invites members of the Charleston community aboard the USS Yorktown for a time to reflect, remember, and honor those who lost their lives on that fateful day. Museum admission and parking will be complimentary for those attending the service.
The Japanese used more than 350 aircraft during the 75-minute attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. In total, 2,403 people were killed in the attack, which includes 2,335 U.S. service members and 68 civilians. More than 300 U.S. aircraft and 19 Navy ships were destroyed or damaged.
“Patriots Point is honored to serve as a place for the community to come together and pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the Pearl Harbor attack 83 years ago,” said Allison Hunt, Executive Director of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.
The service will begin at 11 a.m. and include a wreath-laying, tolling of a bell, and traditional gun salute. Remarks will be given by special guest retired Air Force Major General Charles C. Baldwin.
