Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg will take part in a tribute honoring Trident Technical College President Dr. Mary Thornley, International Artist Dr. Jonathan Green, and Author and Educator Dr. Kim Cliett Long at 11 am on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in City Hall Council Chamber, located at 80 Broad Street.
During the tribute, Dr. Thornley will be awarded the President’s Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award, a prestigious national honor that recognizes extraordinary commitment to serving the community and nation.
After serving more than 30 years as Trident Technical College’s President, Dr. Thornley’s pending retirement was announced last September. During her tenure, the college expanded from three to five campuses and its student population increased from 8,000 to 13,000 to become the third-largest college undergraduate enrollment statewide. In 2018, the college’s Area Commission voted to name its North Charleston-based main campus ‘Thornley Campus.”
Thornley was nominated for the President’s Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award by Green and Long, who lead the Charleston-based Lowcountry Rice Culture Project (LCRCP). Mayor Tecklenburg will also recognize Drs. Green and Long with a proclamation during the tribute.
