The International African American Museum (IAAM), in partnership with the Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church and Bethlehem St. James United Methodist Church are hosting their first History Harvest Series on Saturday, October 29th, from 10 am to 2 pm. Locals are invited to share their genealogical history for it to be preserved by the participant, the church, and the Center for Family History.
Originally developed by the University of Nebraska, History Harvest is a means for people in a community to preserve their family history through photographs, objects, and documents. The focus is on the collection of funeral programs, obituaries as well as oral history to help families preserve their own legacy. This gathering of information is also designed to help the church maintain its own history and gives the Center for Family History at IAAM genealogical research for their collection. Preserving that information lets locals contribute by allowing others to research their family, descendants, and community.
The event will be held at Hebron Zion Presbyterian Church at 2915 Bohicket Road on Johns Island.
Those interested in participating can pre-register at the church or by visiting www.hebronzionpcusa.or g to fill out the registration form. Participants with history to submit are asked to bring a 32 or higher GB flash drive and up to ten funeral programs or obituaries to the event. Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in an oral history interview and will be acknowledged by the museum's Center for Family History as “History Keepers.” Masks are required for attendance.
