In response to anticipated severe weather conditions, the City of Charleston today said they are "taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents." They also released the following details and information:
Weather forecasts indicate heavy rain this evening, coinciding with high tide at 6:04 pm, which may result in temporary flooding. Throughout the day, gusty winds are expected, with maximum sustained winds reaching 35 mph and gusts intensifying up to 50 mph by noon. These conditions could create hazardous situations, particularly for those traveling over bridges.
The City of Charleston advises residents to exercise caution, as the increased wind speeds may lead to the potential for downed power lines, trees, and power outages. Between 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm, severe thunderstorms are forecasted with gusts exceeding 60 mph, and there is a chance of tornadoes during that time.
To mitigate risks, residents are strongly encouraged to:
· Avoid driving during hazardous weather conditions, especially over bridges.
· Steer clear of typical flood-prone areas.
· Secure trash cans to prevent them from becoming hazards in high winds.
· Check road closures on this link.
In response to the expected severe weather, the City of Charleston has implemented the following measures:
· Trash pickup is suspended today and will resume on Wednesday.
· Downtown parking garages will remain free for use until Wednesday at 8:00 am.
· Aquarium parking garage (24 Calhoun Street)
· Visitor Center parking garage (63 Mary Street)
· Queen Street parking garage (93 Queen Street)
· East Bay/Prioleau parking garage (25 Prioleau Street)
