The Charleston Radio group today announced the passing of Mike Edwards, 53, Program Director of WMXZ-FM, Mix 95.9 and the "Guy" on the very popular "Two Girls & a Guy" Morning Show. The Charleston County Coroner said Edwards died in his home off Savannah Highway and his death is presumed to be "a natural death."
The Coroner also said there is no suspicion of foul play and the final cause of death will be determined in 8-10 weeks following the completion of further testing and the finalization of the autopsy report. The Charleston Police Department is the investigating police agency.
"Mike was an amazing person, beloved by his coworkers, listeners and our entire organization and will be truly missed by those fortunate to have crossed his path," Charleston Radio Group President Paul O'Malley said.
Edwards, whose real name was Michael E. Chambers, was a multi-year winner in the Charleston City Paper's annual "Best of" awards, winning the Best Radio Morning Show and Best Local Radio Personality categories several times. He was also a huge supporter of the Charleston Animal Society and Charleston Pride Week.
According to the Charleston Radio Group, Edwards first came to Charleston as the Program Director of 95SX in 1994 and in 1999 joined the "Two Girls & a Guy" Morning Show with Brooke Ryan and Tanya Brown. His career took him to multiple markets but ultimately he returned to Charleston. In 2014 "Two Girls and Guy" reunited on Mix 95.9 WMXZ FM with Mike, Brooke, and Tanya.
In an emotional post to Instagram (see below), Edwards' co-hosts Brooke Ryan and Tanya Brown announced his death to the show's fans. The pair said when Edwards did not show up for work on Thursday morning, they called authorities to conduct a wellness check who discovered that he had died.
Brown and Ryan said Friday's show will feature clips of Edwards' best moments through the years.
