Charleston County Government, Charleston County Public Library (CCPL), and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission have partnered to provide electric vehicle charging stations to the public. This collaboration is a pilot program that is partially grant funded. Three chargers will be housed at the Public Service Building, located at 4045 Bridge View Dr., in North Charleston, and one at each of the following locations:
- Bees Ferry West Ashley Library, 3035 Sanders Rd., Charleston
- Baxter-Patrick James Island Library, 1858 S. Grimball Rd.
- Caw Caw Interpretive Center, 5200 Savannah Hwy., Ravenel
“We hope the public will take advantage of these charging stations. They were strategically placed to reduce range anxiety for those who drive electric vehicles,” said Charleston County Council Chairman Herb Sass. “We are grateful for the partnership with the Libraries and County Parks on this project that will enhance our growing community.”
There will be a small user fee on the chargers except for the one located at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. The $2.00 park entrance fee will cover charging. The chargers at the libraries and Public Services Building will cost $1.32 per hour. This amount covers the County's electricity costs when the EV charging stations are in use. Residents can pay using a contactless credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, or by calling the toll-free number displayed on the stations. Residents who have a ChargePoint account or the mobile app can also use that method of payment.
Charleston County received a $10,000 grant from the South Carolina Energy Office for the chargers.
The County was able to purchase two 2023 Nissan Leaf S Models to use as motor pool vehicles now that chargers are available at the Public Services Building.
