Today, Birla Carbon announced plans to build a $1 billion production facility at the Tri-County Global Industrial Site (TCGIS) in Orangeburg. The facility will create 124 jobs when fully operational.
The decision comes after nearly two years of site evaluations and negotiations between all partners. Birla Carbon will build a 435,000-square-foot facility at the Tri-County Industrial Site, which includes a 45-acre building pad ready site.
TCGIS is owned and has been developed by Tri-County Electric Cooperative. In addition, the South Carolina Power Team is an investment partner through its Site Readiness Fund (SRF). Since 2014, the South Carolina Power Team, the economic development organization for South Carolina’s 19 electric cooperatives, has invested nearly $70 million in sites across the State.
“We are thrilled to welcome Birla Carbon to the Cooperative family," said Chad Lowder, CEO of Tri-County Electric Cooperative. "This project reflects the strategic investments Tri-County Electric Cooperative has made in infrastructure and site development in Orangeburg County. The job creation and investment in our community will not only boost our local economy but also highlight our commitment to fostering growth and innovation in the region.”
