Oakland Market Destination Brings Total to Five in Greater Charleston
By: Jeff Walker, Business Review
In case you missed it Mount Pleasant now has a second location for New York Butcher Shoppe. With Mount Pleasant continuing to grow into the fourth largest city in South Carolina, the popular franchise that focuses on fresh cut premium meats recently threw open their doors in Oakland Market off Highway 17 just north of Hwy 41.
All total, that makes five locations for New York Butcher Shoppe in greater Charleston with four east of the Cooper River, including one on Daniel Island and Isle of Palms, and a second Mount Pleasant location on Ben Sawyer Boulevard. The fifth store opened earlier this year in the Shops at Nexton in Summerville.
While all have similarities, the Oakland Market shop is by far the largest and carries a wide varieties of specialty products, prepared foods, and a nice selection of wine and beers that complement their pre-packaged heat and serve menu items including succulent entrees, side dishes, and salads.
First and foremost, New York Butcher Shoppe is an old school meat market beyond compare. Very few if any supermarkets in greater Charleston carry and or provide the same high-quality meats as you’ll get at New York Butcher Shoppe. Another thing you’ll notice is the attention to customer service. At New York Butcher Shoppe the staff are all skilled in the craft and extremely knowledgeable when it comes to selections of meat.
While most supermarkets carry a few beef choices as well as pork and poultry, New York Butcher Shoppe carries nearly a dozen cuts of beef including porterhouse, bacon wrapped filet, and stuffed flank steak alongside fresh cut certified 100% Angus ribeye’s, filet mignon, and New York strip steaks.
Rounding out their fresh meat menu are various cuts of pork including bacon wrapped tenderloin, leg of lamb, veal cutlets, plump boneless skinned chicken breasts, as well as all natural whole chickens. Craving sweet Italian sausage, center cut pork or veal chops, then New York Butcher Shoppe is the place to shop.
Beef, pork, and chicken may be the marquee attraction, but NYBS offer a plethora of uncooked and pre-cooked dishes that are both sumptuous and filling. Enjoy four signature salads (chicken, pasta, green & Greek) or maybe take-home Goat Cheese Chicken.
Carry out any of NYBS’s more than a dozen pre-cooked items and they’re ready to serve after just 15-30 minutes in your kitchen oven. Not sure what to have for dinner tonight maybe take-home chicken, veal, meatball, or eggplant parmesan. Go full scale Italian with baked manicotti. Appetizing entrees oozing with cheese ready for the table in less than half an hour.
Meat and potato lovers will relish in Prime Roast and Twice-Baked Potatoes accompanied with grilled veggies. Many entrees such as beef stroganoff or meatloaf easily feed a family of four or two with hearty appetites. Several entrees set the tone for a romantic evening such as vodka penne or any of their assorted quiches. Twice baked potatoes make for a nice side dish or a lighter meal.
Complete the meal with an affordable yet full-bodied bottles of red and white wine, or sparkling champagne. Not a wine connoisseur (90% of us aren’t) than check their website out or ask their staff to pair fruit of the vine with your choice of entrees. New York Butcher Shoppe’s specialty cheeses make for a nice pre-meal appetizer. Ideal with a variety of wines.
Several chain supermarkets offer fresh cuts of meat and oven ready meals, but of those that do, most do not carry the same quality of meats or prepare their pre-packaged meals with the same premium products you find in New York Butcher Shoppe.
I’ve tried several items from New York Butcher Shoppe, and I have to admit they are scrumptious. Their brisket is moist and nicely seasoned and stands up or exceeds several local barbecue houses. Their chicken parmesan dish will make true Italians mouth water, with an ideally spicy marinara sauce complementing a nice array of parmesan.
By far one of my favorite entrees from NYBS is their Shepherd’s Pie. For those not familiar it’s basically a hearty full meal casserole consisting of ground beef, mixed veggies, layered under real mashed potatoes and blanketed with an assortment of cheese. Pre-heat your oven to 350 and it’s ready to serve in less than 30 minutes. Even picky youngsters will enjoy a helping of Shepherd’s Pie. Great for lunch, dinner, or whenever a hungry craving hits!
Depending on your tastes it’s hard to go wrong at New York Butcher Shoppe. Fresh meats cut daily, oven ready meals, packaged foods, craft beer, wine, a unique selection of cheeses, as well as seasonings and sauces (many from local & regional vendors). Plenty of items to adorn your table or charcuterie plate including Charleston’s Own Fancy Pecan Pralines or Okra Chips. Maybe spice up that salad or meaty entree with Vidalia Onion Summer Tomato or Peppercorn Dressing. Ooh-la-la!
Their name may echo the Empire State but make no mistake they are all about keeping it local. Think of New York Butcher Shoppe as a cross between an old school meat market (where quality matters) and a niche low country neighborhood pantry that offers a variety of food & beverage items. Eat and repeat!
Be sure to take home some Night & Day Cookies aka Black & White, a fluffy angel-cake based confection iced in vanilla & chocolate and made popular in NYC bakeries. Maybe add some local craft beer from Munkel, Westbrook, or Edmund’s Oast to your shopping list.
