Limehouse Produce, a local, family-owned and operated seller of fresh fruits and vegetables, has brought back an awareness campaign to promote the availability of the now-in-season Charleston heirloom tomatoes.
The Charleston Heirloom Tomato Trek began on Monday, June 20th and will run through July 22nd. The goal of the campaign is to bring more awareness about the varietals, the farmers, and the supporting chefs. They also want to encourage people to go out and enjoy the local delicacy.
The majority of the tomatoes available for the campaign will be grown by local farmersat Geechie Boy Mill and Heritage Fields Farm.
Part of the trek includes a contest between local restaurants, chefs, and bartenders. Each are competing to see who makes the best dish or drink featuring heirloom tomatoes. Patrons can vote for their favorite on Limehouse Produce's official website. They can also take a photo and post on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram tagging #tomatotrek. One person will be randomly selected to win a $100 gift card to the winning restaurant. As of June 20th, these are the participating restaurants and bars:

The types of local heirloom tomatoes being showcased during the campaign include: Sun Gold Cherries, Golden Nugget, Red and Green Zebra, Striped German, Purple Cherokee, Mr. Brownie, Indigo, Shenghaung, Cluj Yellow, Ghost Cherry, White and Black Cherry, and Peacevine.
