Credit: Baxter Miller Handy & Hot, the grab-and-go bakery and coffee shop from chef and PBS personality Vivian Howard, will start selling chef Juan Cassalett’s Basque Cherry hand pie to continue the series of collaborations with Charleston chefs.
Starting Friday, April 1st, Handy & Hot guests can enjoy a hand pie developed by Cassalett, the chef at Charleston's Malagon. Cassalett’s hand pie features dried cherries, lemon, brandy, and rum and is topped with whipped cream. The hand pie will be available for $6 through May 31st. The hand pie collaboration kicked off in March 2021 with chef Shuai Wang of Jackrabbit Filly. Hand pies, both sweet and savory, have become a cornerstone of the Handy & Hot brand and one of its most popular items. Other participating chefs will or have included: Gullah Geechee foodways expert, BJ Dennis; Jill Mathias of Chez Nous; Jacques Larson of The Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive restaurants; and Pitmaster Rodney Scott of Rodney Scott’s BBQ. Handy & Hot is open daily at 68 Wentworth Street from 7 am to 3:30 pm.
