Southern Living today released their annual list of The South's Best New Barbecue Joints and the Charleston area had three restaurants make the cut, including the No. 1 entry, Palmira Barbecue. The state of South Carolina had five restaurants on the list, which was tied with Texas for the most. Charleston and Raleigh, NC were the only cities to have multiple BBQ joints make the cut.
Southern Living’s Contributing Barbecue Editor Robert Moss traveled all over the South to put all different BBQ joints to the test and hand select the winners on the list. The winners are editor’s picks, chosen based on factors like overall experience, setting, food presentation, sauces, and authenticity to the region. Some are repeats from last year’s list that have moved up or down on the list, and some are brand new spots.
“For starters, most are traditionalists in at least some sense," Moss writes about the restaurant's included on the list. "Most cook on wood-fired pits, and many have embraced and championed the long-running specialties of their particular regions. At the same time, each is doing their own thing, experimenting with new flavors and techniques, adopting less-common cuts of meat, and drawing upon family recipes and their own culinary heritage.”
Charleston area restaurants included:
- # 1 - Palmira Barbecue, 2366 Ashley River Rd., Building 1, Charleston
- # 3 - King BBQ, 2029 Carver Ave., North Charleston
- # 14 - Rancho Lewis, 1503 King St., Charleston
