The Matador at 235 Meeting Street is honoring the cultural traditions of Mexico by celebrating Día de los Muertos from October 31 to November 2. You can join the restaurant in celebrating all weekend long over Mexican-inspired and scratch-made dishes, themed drink specials, and decor inspired by the holiday. Seating for lunch and dinner is open to the public and will be available on a walk-in basis during typical business hours.
From October 31 to November 2, The Matador will offer three drink specials, with flavor profiles inspired by Día de los Muertos traditions:
- Pumpkin Margarita: The pumpkin margarita blends seasonal flavors inspired by the holiday — featuring blanco tequila and a sour mix made of pumpkin, pineapple, lime, and a blend of autumn spices, topped with an edible marigold
- Mole + Mezcal: This cocktail has a sweet, smoky + spicy kick. Sweet agave and smoky mezcal mix with a house-made mole sauce for an adventurous cocktail that's packed with flavor
- Pan de Muertos: This cocktail is inspired by a traditional sweetbread dessert that's served as an offering in many households during Día de los Muertos. This sweet and creamy drink has notes of vanilla, oak, and orange + features a house-made dulce de leche
Dia de Los Muertos (also known as "Day of the Dead") is a two-day holiday dedicated to the deceased with traditions rooted in ancient Mesoamerican, Spanish, and European cultures dating back 3,000+ years. The holiday involves gatherings to remember friends and family members who have passed and is associated with traditions like creating ofrendas (altars to collect offerings for the deceased), and symbols like the sugar skull and Mexican marigolds.
"As a restaurant that is heavily influenced by Mexican culture and cuisine, Matador looks forward to bringing some of the traditions of Día de los Muertos to the Charleston community," the restaurant said through a press release.
