The second edition of AfroSouth, a local cultural festival will take place from November 2nd to 5th, 2023. This year features an impressive lineup of talent, thought-provoking discussions, and a celebration of cinema and culture.
This year’s AfroSouth festival is proud to present three of the entertainment industry’s most gifted and acclaimed professionals:
Julie Dash: Renowned Director

Sanford Greene: Accomplished Comic Illustrator

- Notable Credits: “Barbershop,” “Girls Trip”
AfroSouth 2023 will offer an eclectic mix of cultural experiences, including a free outdoor movie screening at Marion Square. This year’s featured film is Hidden Figures, a compelling and inspirational story that celebrates the achievements of African-American women in the early days of the space program.
Kicking off the festivities is a screening and engaging discussion of SCETV’s documentary “Downing of a Flag.” This documentary delves into the pivotal events that led to the removal of the Confederate flag from the statehouse, a significant moment in South Carolina’s history that reflects the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality. This event will be held at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library.
In addition, AfroSouth is hosting a young filmmakers competition, which will be a platform for emerging talent to showcase their creativity and storytelling abilities.
AfroSouth will also be introducing a special recognition, “The Kitt Award,” in honor of actress and South Carolina native Eartha Kitt. This award will be presented to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in the dramatic arts, celebrating their outstanding contributions to the entertainment industry.
The event promises to not only celebrate African-American culture, but also foster important conversations on social issues and provide opportunities for emerging talent.
