In collaboration with the Garden Club of Charleston, the Joseph Manigault House will debut its annual holiday decorations on December 7th, featuring greenery and florals native to the Lowcountry in the early 1800s, including camellias, poinsettias, magnolia leaf wreathes, and other local plants. Members of the Garden Club will adorn mantles, doors, and banisters with stunning wreaths and arrangements creating an historic and beautiful holiday display that runs through December 26th.
The Joseph Manigault House, a National Historic Landmark, was the first structure to be saved from demolition in Charleston’s budding preservation movement of the 1920s. The house is an exceptional example of Federal style architecture, showcasing a prominent spiral staircase in the central hall and features historic objects from the Museum’s collections.
On December 5th, Chad Stewart, Curator of History, will host a themed guided tour of the Heyward-Washington House. Guests will learn how early Americans celebrated during the holidays and experience the Heyward-Washington House’s holiday decor while enjoying punch and cookies. Built in 1772, the residence was home to Thomas Heyward, Jr., a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, and was where George Washington stayed during his 1791 visit to the city.
“Our collaboration with the Garden Club is a cherished tradition that offers visitors an immersive experience in our historic homes, allowing them to step back in time and imagine a 19th-century Christmas,” said Carl Borick, Director of The Charleston Museum. “By incorporating local greenery and staying true to historical accuracy, this event provides a unique, educational opportunity that highlights our Lowcountry heritage—and may even inspire your own holiday decorating.”
The historic houses are open Monday through Saturday 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 p.m .- 5:00 p.m. (last tour begins at 4:15 p.m. at the Heyward-Washington House and 4:30 p.m. at the Joseph Manigault House). Tickets can be purchased onsite or online and bundled for discounted pricing.
