Lowcountry Juneteenth of Charleston will be hosting its first ever outdoor festival during a week-long celebration called Lowcountry Juneteenth Week (LJW) from June 14th to 20th, 2021. The event will highlight black owned businesses with curated events throughout the city including live performances, exhibits, seminars and more. LJW will also focus on economic empowerment by presenting virtual seminars that focus on health and wellness, real estate, financial freedom, legal matters, and entrepreneurship. The festival also welcomes Ms. Opal Lee, 94-year-old community activist, who has long advocated for a national celebration of Juneteenth. Ms. Opal’s efforts have garnered over a million signatures to make Juneteenth a nationally recognized federal holiday. Lowcountry Juneteenth Week has been declared the “Official” Juneteenth Festival of the Lowcountry by the Juneteenth National Observance Foundation where Ms. Opal Lee is the oldest member.
