Local author Emma Vigrass recently released her second children’s book, which draws on her experiences overcoming chronic illness and allergy-related challenges. In this new tale, Emma and her friends navigate the sometimes challenging, always exciting feelings surrounding birthdays. Emma and the Birthday Week features illustrations by Charleston artist Enrique Boyd and is now available for purchase on Amazon.
“Chronic illnesses and allergies impact so many kids, and this book series is one way we as a family support Emma and support the conversations surrounding these subjects,” said Casey Vigrass, Emma’s mom. “We love that Emma is pursuing a passion of hers while adding new books depicting these childhood experiences.”
Emma and the Birthday Week is the latest installment in the "Emma Explores" series. Her first book, Kindergarten, Here I Come, came about as Emma prepared to start kindergarten. The book became a way to share more about her allergy- and disease-restricted diet and alleviate first-day jitters.
The heart of these books is empowering children with allergies and disease-related concerns to stand up for themselves and kindly educate others. Emma and the Birthday Week chronicles how Emma applies the skills and techniques she uses in her own life during celebratory events.
Both in the book and in real life, Emma struggles with a chronic esophagus condition called eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). A portion of book proceeds will be donated to the Cured Foundation, which furthers research on eosinophilic diseases.
“I wanted to help other kids like me feel comfortable in new and different settinngs,” Emma said. “I had so much fun with our first book, I figured why not do it again?”
