On January 1, 2025, the International African American Museum (IAAM), in partnership with the Charleston Emancipation Proclamation Association, will commemorate the anniversary of the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the proclamation declared freedom for enslaved persons in Confederate states, laying the foundation for liberation and the ongoing fight for equality.
Following the Charleston Emancipation Day Parade, head to the IAAM for an inspiring program featuring musical performances, an exploration of the historical context and impact of emancipation, and a ceremonial reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. To further recognize the significance of this day, the IAAM is offering complimentary admission for the community.
