20 South Battery, a historic boutique hotel, today announced its upcoming Launch Party on April 28th, celebrating its feature on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) show, "America: The Land We Live In."
The event, by invitation only, will reunite the entire cast and crew of the show for an evening of celebration and reflection. In addition, renowned Charelston-based artist, Jonathan Green, will be in attendance along with demonstrations of Charleston Sweetgrass Basket weaving.
In the documentary series, which aired its pilot episode in March, PBS showcased two iconic Charleston landmarks, including 20 South Battery, in their exploration of historic spots highlighted in the 19th-century book "Picturesque America." This book is revered as one of the nation's earliest travel guides, and the film delves into the "then and now" of each 150-year-old location while uncovering the culture, history, and beauty of each place. Alongside Drayton Hall, 20 South Battery was prominently featured, capturing the essence of its timeless elegance and historic significance.
"America: The Land We Live In" takes viewers on a captivating journey to rediscover America's hidden treasures and forgotten national wonders through the lens of a 19th-century travelogue," said Abigal Batut, General Manager of 20 South Battery. "We are honored to have been a part of this remarkable series, and we look forward to sharing our story with the world."
20 South Battery, which has a history dating back to the 1840s, was recently restored to its former glory. The hotel's architecture and accommodations offer guests a glimpse into Charleston's storied past.
"As stewards of Charleston's rich history, it is our duty to safeguard properties like 20 South Battery," said Dr. Jack L. Schaeffer, a preservationist and historian. "The hotel serves as a microcosm of Charleston's distinguished past, offering invaluable insights into the city's vibrant heritage."
