Welcome to the world of Victorian England, an era marked by social constraint in public, and the double lives which many people led as a direct consequence of these mannerly facades. That’s where you will find the mysteries and mayhem surrounding Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the Tony-nominated epic, gothic thriller Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical, opening August 23rd at the historic Queen Street Playhouse to kick of Charleston's oldest theatre company's 93rd season.
Directed by FLP Artistic Director Kyle Barnette (The Full Monty, POTUS) and featuring visiting guest artist Andrew Anderson in the dual title roles along with FLP stage favorite Rebecca Weatherby (The Last Five Years, A Gentleman’s Guide To Love & Murder), Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create an evil and murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.
Guest artist Andrew Anderson, a Greenville, SC based actor, joins the cast taking on the vocally and physically challenging dual roles of Dr. Jekyll and his murderous alter ego Mr. Hyde. Andrew works regularly in the Greenville theatre scene, most recently in the acclaimed production of Assassins at Warehouse Theatre.
Jekyll & Hyde is pure, pulse-pounding theatre, with a lush, romantic pop score hailed as a modern classic even before the show began its smash-hit, Tony nominated Broadway run and promises to be an epic start to Footlight's ambitious 93rd season. The theater's lineup also includes two regional premiere straight from Broadway productions, the very dark local government comedy The Minutes and the hysterical two man show Gutenburg! The Musical. The season will also include the ruthless classic drama Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, A Christmas Story, and the beloved Sondheim musical Into the Woods.
