The Charleston Forum today announced the details of its first in-person event since 2019; a program titled Appreciating Each Other's History: Monuments, Memory, and the Future of the Past in the Palmetto State. The event, which will consist of two panel discussions, will feature a number of prominent speakers and will be held on Friday, June 10th at 6 pm at the Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston.
The Charleston Forum, which strives to provide the community with ways to move forward together on otherwise divisive issues involving race, has hosted multiple events in years past featuring local and national leaders. This year, the Forum will welcome Congressman Jim Clyburn and University of South Carolina Interim President Harris Pastides as moderators of the two panels.
The first panel, moderated by Congressman Clyburn, will consist of a group of historians who will delve into topics such as the nature and importance of public history; changes in the public history landscape of our state and region since the murders at Mother Emanuel; Charleston's current public history landscape; ways in which the current public history landscape might be improved; and ways in which historians and public officials might work together to better their communities.
The second panel, moderated by President Pastides, will bring together a group of elected officials to discuss the options for how we address these issues in the future, with consideration of South Carolina’s Heritage Act, recommendations of the History/Culture Committee of Charleston Special Commission, and the role of state government in shaping the public history of South Carolina going forward.
“We're excited and honored to have such an influential group of leaders and scholars join The Charleston Forum event this year,” said Brian Duffy, CEO of The Charleston Forum. “Each of the guests participating in these two panel discussions brings a unique perspective and approach to tackling issues of race in our community. Our hope is that these thoughtful panel discussions with subject matter experts and officials who determine public policy of tomorrow will enable The Forum's audience to shape how our community addresses these issues present with us today.”
Tickets are available to the public through Eventbrite, and can be purchased for $5 by clicking here: https://thecharlestonforum.com/annualevent2022/
The program will begin at 6 pm, with food available to attendees beginning at 5 pm.
