Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) and the Charleston County Board of Voter Registration and Elections (BVRE) have teamed up to educate young readers on the importance of voting through a new children’s book starring the Library’s feathered mascot, Owlbert the Owl. The book will officially launch on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library, located at 3503 Rivers Ave. in North Charleston.
“Owlbert Learns to Vote” follows the adventures of Owlbert the Owl and his young forest friends as they learn the significance of community engagement and the voting process. With delightful illustrations and relatable storytelling, Owlbert makes learning about democracy fun and accessible for young audiences, and the book includes a glossary of terms and questions for caretakers and educators to help engage readers with the material.
“In every community, big or small, the voices of its members shape the world around them,” said BVRE Executive Director Isaac Cramer. “This book is a journey into the world of choices where children will learn that voting isn’t just for grown-ups, it’s for everyone.”
A launch event for the book will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at the Keith Summey North Charleston Library. The event is open to the public and will feature an interactive reading of the book, a chance to meet Owlbert himself, and giveaways of the book.
Copies of the book will also be available for check out at all CCPL branches and can be placed on hold after Oct. 16 at ccpl.org through the catalog.
“We are honored to partner with CHS Votes (BVRE) to create Owlbert Learns to Vote,” said CCPL Executive Director Angela Craig. “Books about voting are crucial for our children, as they not only educate but also inspire. By understanding the power of their voices, we empower the next generation to participate actively in shaping their communities and futures."
