The Bend, a 17-acre property overlooking the Ashley River, announces a natural community project in North Charleston on Azalea Drive. With a focus on responsible development, The Bend, created by The Pearlstine Company, is opening to the public and will undertake collaborative projects rooted in goodwill and local culture while the master plan is developed.
Bordered on the east by the historic Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery and on the west by the Jenkins Children's Institute, The Bend is enhanced by a rich history. Centrally located on the Ashley River, The Bend presents a community space where Lowcountry residents and visitors can connect, gather and explore. The property and programming will evolve over time, as The Bend looks to create mindfully with a larger community vision guiding all decisions.
“For 150 years the Pearlstine family has been growing businesses and investing in communities across the South Carolina Lowcountry,” said Susan Pearlstine, Owner of The Bend. “I am excited to continue in this entrepreneurial tradition, creating a legacy opportunity on the Ashley River just minutes from downtown Charleston, West Ashley and Charleston International Airport.”
The Bend looks forward to being a hub of community activity, including a Streetside gathering place on Azalea Drive, free Wi-Fi, food opportunities and rotating art installations.
The community is invited for a first look at The Bend at a Drop-in Picnic Saturday, April 22 between 11am-4 p.m. Benefiting the Charleston Promise Neighborhood and Metanoia, guests can pack their own picnic or enjoy barbecue available by Rodney Scott's Bar-B-Q and Jim ‘N Nick's Bar-B-Q. The event is open to the public and will feature live music, festivities, and plenty of opportunities to explore and learn about the year ahead.
From April 21 to June 20, The Bend is partnering with Lowcountry Local First for a public art installation. The public can visit The Bend to view the “Love A Local” art that was created for the organization's 10-year anniversary. Designed by local artists, the large, individual 3K format letters spell “Love A Local.” This exhibit is open to the public, and guests are encourage to snap and tag photos with #LoveALocal.
The Bend is located on 3775 Azalea Drive in North Charleston. To learn more about the property, experiences and events, visit www.thebendcharleston.com.
