The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission announces The Gullah Convening, an exclusive Black-Tie Affair that promises to be a highlight of the holiday season. Taking place on December 27th in the elegant Camden Room at the Charleston Visitor Center, this event will spotlight the resilience and excellence of Gullah Geechee culture through food, entertainment, and meaningful dialogue.
The evening will be hosted by two cultural trailblazers: 2024 James Beard Award Winner and Black Food Fridays Creator KJ Kearney and Ron Daise, celebrated cultural performer and star of the Nickelodeon smash children’s show: Gullah Gullah Island. Together, they will guide attendees through an unforgettable night of culinary artistry, cultural storytelling, and live entertainment.
Guests will indulge in a five-course meal prepared by renowned chefs, including:
- Chef Keith Rhodes, James Beard nominee and owner of Catch in Wilmington, NC.
- Chef Sallie Ann Robinson, cookbook author and cultural historian from Daufuskie Island, SC.
- Chef Kevin Mitchell, Charleston native, culinary historian, and James Beard nominee.
- Amethyst Ganaway, Chef, Writer (Food & Wine, NY Times), and a Lowcountry rising culinary star.
Each dish will be paired with curated wines, reflecting the deep connection between Gullah cuisine and heritage. The event will also feature live music, food demonstrations, and cultural displays, creating an immersive celebration of Gullah excellence.
Proceeds from The Gullah Convening will fund preservation efforts, cultural programming, and community initiatives within the Gullah Geechee Corridor.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is a National Heritage Area managed by the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission. The purpose of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor NHA is to preserve, share and interpret the history, traditional cultural practices, heritage sites, and natural resources associated with Gullah Geechee people of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
