In February of 2015, Henry Riggs and Maari Suorsa (a.k.a. Nameless Numberhead) started an alt comedy show called Rip City that would spawn a slew of original characters, recurring comedy bits, and a full on grab bag of the bizarre side of Charleston performing arts. Over the years, Rip City has been the testing ground for local comedians, musicians, and artists of all varieties to explore the weirder side of their mediums. It's been a staple of the underground comedy scene in Charleston and a great place to discover new voices in the community. Pre-Covid, the show took a hiatus that ended up becoming a much longer thanks to the pandemic. For about a year, the show went into a completely online format, live streaming a monthly show of original comedy and music videos.
The show will return to the stage on November 12th and continue monthly at a variety of awesome spots around town. The November show will debut at the brand new Silver Hill Studios, which is the home of the Lawton Miles Production company, run by Sully Sullivan and Adam Boozer. In December, they will host a free show at Hed Hi Studio, Tim McManus's brain child and hub for some of the best studio artists in town. Starting in the new year, Rip City will be hosted by LO-Fi Brewing on Upper Meeting Street.
The shows will include a rotating cast of artists, so each performance is completely different. Over the course of the near eight-year run, many past performers have moved away from Charleston, but the core principles of the show always encourage new voices to create works never seen before, creating a comfortable atmosphere for audiences to discover new performers. Past performers include: The EffinBRadio Podcast, Joel Hamilton, Sage Graham, Marcus Amaker, Tay McNabb a.k.a. DJ Party Dad, Andy Livengood, Camille Lowman, Secret Guest, Mr. Bonetangles a.k.a Will Schutz, Jessica Mickey, Vernon Moses, Hunter Gardner, Faline, Jason Groce, Nic Jenkins, Tim Hoeckel, Joseph Coker, Kevin Hanley, Nameless Numberhead, and many more.
