Local organizer and justice advocate Tamika “Mika” Gadsden officially marked the public launch of her 2023 Charleston mayoral campaign with an appearance at today's YWCA Martin Luther King Day Parade.
Gadsden said MLK Day is an “especially important holiday in the Holy City with civil rights figures Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife Coretta Scott King having left an indelible mark on Charleston through their fierce, on-the-ground fight for civil and labor rights.”
Gadsden noted how the iconic figures have also served as an inspiration for her own mayoral candidacy.
“So much of the grassroots organizing framework that I work within and benefit from today was established by Civil Rights movement work that the King family championed in this city,” she said.
Gadsden plans to follow up this official campaign launch with a special pop-up event on Charleston's Westside on February 12th. Additional details on this and other upcoming events can be found at votemika.com.
