The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System performed its first colonoscopy using GI Genius, an artificial intelligence module used to help detect precancerous polyps.
The Charleston VA is the only VA in the southeast (third VA overall) to use artificial intelligence technology to detect polyps and according to recent studies, is 50% more likely to detect multiple polyps.
The GI Genius module adds the power of artificial intelligence to routine colonoscopies and is a “smart” technology that analyzes what the doctor views in real time and works together with the doctor to identify anything needing a closer look. By instantly flagging potential abnormalities, the new technology can help detect lesions, including precancerous polyps.

Colonoscopy is one tool used for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, a recommended part of health care for those over age 45.
