Local businessman and State Representative William Cogswell (right) today announced his candidacy for Mayor of Charleston in the 2023 election. He said his top priorities would be to tackle crime, flooding, infrastructure, and affordable housing issues.
Cogswell has served Charleston for three terms in the SC Legislature. He has owned a business for over 25 years and is responsible for nationally award-winning adaptive reuse projects like the Cigar Factory and GARCo Mill.
“Charleston is a special place that needs real vision, leadership, and a collaborative approach to governance in order to address our compounding problems,” said Cogswell. “It's time to be proactive, and I believe I have the experience and track record we need to move our city forward.”
State Representative Wendell Gilliard (D) and former U.S. District Attorney and former House Representative Peter McCoy (R) already announced their endorsements for Cogswell's campaign.
“I'm supporting William because he's got backbone,” said Representative Gilliard. “He is a man that doesn't let a party or politics get in the way of common sense. That is important- especially in the world today. I also know from experience that he is someone that can sit at the table and work with anyone to find real solutions to problems.”
Peter McCoy echoed Gilliard's sentiments.
“We need someone with William's experience to lead us forward,” he said. “Our problems are not going away, and when it comes to issues like crime and quality of life, we are going in the wrong direction. William is not afraid to try something new, plus he is well respected locally, in Columbia, and in Washington. This is what we need right now to get things done, so I'm glad he is running, and I'm excited to support him.”
